Can you jump rope indoors?
For some, jumping at home is either the most convenient option or the only option. This could be due to a busy work schedule, family commitments, or lack of access to a gym.
If you choose to jump rope indoors at home you need to consider which room, and therefore which flooring, to jump rope on. Ideally, a smooth and flat surface such as wood or laminate should be your first choice. If you don’t have these available to you, then your next best option is a smooth concrete or tiled floor. Be wary of these types of surfaces though since they can be slippery even when not wet. The last resort is carpeted floors. Although not ideal, if they’re your only option then it’s worth bearing in mind why they’re not ideal - carpet has a habit of making the rope’s arc bounce excessively off its surface when the cord strikes it making it harder to control.
If you’re jumping on a tiled or carpeted surface, you may benefit from investing in a thin jump rope mat to improve the conditions and help you get the most out of your workout.
Wherever you choose to jump rope indoors, be vigilant for other safety concerns such as loose cables and free objects which can be a trip hazard. Avoid rooms with low-hanging light fittings. And, if you have neighbours below you, be aware of the noise you’ll create from jumping indoors.
