What’s the difference between hard and soft beads?
The main reason to invest in a beaded rope for freestyle is added weight. Hard beads have historically been the default for 20+ years. Soft beads are a newer invention. The main ‘selling point’ of soft beads is that they’re quieter when they hit the ground. But what’s the real difference? Is one better than the other?
Soft beads, usually made from rubber or TPU, are lighter than traditional beads, therefore, removing the key benefit of added weight. Beaded ropes are primarily designed to provide more feedback by being heavier than PVC ropes; making hard beads the better option.
In terms of longevity, decent-quality beaded ropes are shatterproof, so there’s no need for soft ‘squishy” beads. Both are still damaged by rough concrete.
Soft beads are more appealing due to the fact they’re quieter when they hit the ground. But this is a trivial USP. Since you’re jumping on the spot, the noise created by you jumping far exceeds the rope, meaning any reduction in the sound of the rope won’t achieve much if your goal is to be quiet.
The difference is miniscule. Overall, hard is better.
